Why Surgery Abroad Costs Less — and When Cheap Is a Warning Sign
The economics behind international price differences, what a fair quote includes, and the line between a good deal and a bad decision.
A facelift in a major US city can cost several times what an equally credentialed surgeon charges in Istanbul, Prague, or São Paulo. Patients understandably ask: what's the catch?
Often, there isn't one. Sometimes, there is. Knowing the difference is the whole game.
Why the same operation costs less abroad
Surgeon fees track local economics: staff salaries, rent, malpractice insurance, and what the local market will pay. A surgeon in Turkey or Brazil with identical training and outcomes to a Manhattan surgeon simply operates in a cheaper economy. Nothing about the airfare changes their skill.
What a fair quote includes
Insist on a written, itemized quote covering:
- Surgeon's fee and anesthesia (administered by a physician anesthesiologist)
- Facility fee for an accredited hospital or surgical center
- All pre-op testing and post-op appointments
- Medications and garments
- The revision policy, in writing
If a quote is vague about any of these, the real price is higher than the number on the page.
When cheap is a warning sign
Be cautious when:
- The price is far below the norm for that city, not just below your home market
- You can't get the operating surgeon's name and registry-verifiable credentials
- The clinic pushes you to book with a deposit before a real consultation
- "Before and after" photos are inconsistent, watermarked from elsewhere, or all taken at day 10
- Reviews exist only on the clinic's own site
The math that matters
Compare total cost — surgery, travel, hotel for the full recommended stay, and a companion if you want one — against your home quote. For major procedures the savings usually remain substantial. If the difference only works by skipping recovery nights or flying home early, it doesn't work.
We negotiate transparent, written pricing with every surgeon in our cohort, and we'd rather tell you a procedure isn't worth traveling for than make a match we can't stand behind.
